In March 1998, Chengqing Zong received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). From May 1998 to April 2000, he worked at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition (NLPR), Institute of Automation, CAS, as a post-doctoral research fellow. He has been working with NLPR since finishing his post-doctoral program. Now he is a professor and the deputy director of NLPR.

Dr. Zong was invited as a Guest Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Spoken Language Translation, Advanced Telecommunications Research Laboratories International (ATR-SLT) in Japan in 1999 and 2001, and as a Visiting Scholar at GETA (the Groupe d'Étude pour la Traduction Automatique in Communication Langagière et Interaction Personne-Système) in France in 2004.

His main research interests are machine translation, spoken language parsing, and human-computer dialogue system etc. As a principal he has undertaken 6 projects sponsored by Natural Science Foundation of China, and the High-Tech. Program (863) of China. He has also been actively involved in some international research collaboration projects. He has published more than 60 papers in the recent years, including in journals IEEE Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, ACM Transactions on Asian Language Information Processing, and Machine Translation. He is also granted several patents of China. Now he serves on Asian Federation of Natural Language Processing (AFNLP) as an executive member and the journal IEEE Intelligent System as an associate editor. He is also a specially invited academic consultant and guest professor at Tsinghua University, guest professor at Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, standing member of the Chinese Association of Artificial Intelligence, standing member of the Society of Chinese Information Processing of China as well.
